An impressive hand-sculpted terracotta figure of a stylised bull, with a beautiful natural patina reflecting its age.
North India, Jodhpur.
Late 19th century.
Originating from the region of Jodhpur, in northern Rajasthan, this type of piece was traditionally used as a votive offering or as a decorative element in rural homes.
The bull, a symbol of strength, fertility, and protection in Hindu culture, is reminiscent of Nandi, the sacred mount of the god Shiva. The naive and expressive style is characteristic of tribal art from the Thar Desert region.
Worn surfaces, losses consistent with age, original patina, and traces of pigment and remnants of polychromy.
